The Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada 2025 was celebrated from 1 to 15 November 2025 with the objective of honouring tribal heritage, empowering tribal communities through scientific agricultural awareness, and promoting sustainable livelihood practices. The Pakhwada was organized as a tribute to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose legacy and contributions form the central inspiration for this national observance. ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur, conducted a wide range of awareness, training, and community outreach programmes across Jabalpur and Mandla districts throughout the 15-day celebration. The activities aimed to strengthen tribal farming systems, enhance knowledge on sustainable agriculture, and improve access to modern technologies. Farmers were sensitized on improved agricultural practices, scientific storage, prevention of post-harvest losses, soil health management, and adoption of good agricultural practices for the Rabi season. Special emphasis was given to GI-tagged agricultural produce, conservation of indigenous crop varieties, balanced nutrition, millet-based diets, and the safe handling of herbicides and agrochemicals.
Digital empowerment was promoted through demonstrations of ICAR-DWR’s mobile applications-HerbCal, Weed Seed Guru, and Weed Manager, which enable farmers to make informed decisions on weed identification, herbicide dosage, and integrated weed management. A Farmers’ Rally at the research farm further showcased modern weed management tools, resource-efficient practices, and sustainable technologies suited to tribal regions. Complementary programmes on governance, institutional strengthening, and the establishment of Tribal Farmers’ Markets supported direct marketing and income enhancement. Awareness activities for school students highlighted sustainable agriculture, eco-friendly weed management, and the role of science in empowering tribal communities, while the observance paid tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda Jayanti, honouring his legacy and contribution to tribal identity and rights.
Overall, the 15-day Pakhwada significantly strengthened ICAR-DWR’s engagement with tribal communities and promoted the integration of indigenous knowledge with scientific innovations for sustainable agricultural development. The entire Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada 2025 was successfully organized under the guidance of the TSP Implementing Committee of ICAR-DWR, Jabalpur.
