An Awareness-cum-Training Programme on “Khet Bachao Abhiyan and Balanced Use of Fertilizers” was successfully organized on 10 June 2026 at Padariya village, a tribal-dominated village of Kundam block, Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of 42 farmers, including 17 women farmers (Mahila Kisan).
The programme was facilitated by Dr. P. K. Mukherjee, Principal Scientist, ICAR-DWR, who coordinated the activities and interacted extensively with the participating farmers. During the programme, Dr. Mukherjee elaborated on the likely impact of El Niño on the forthcoming monsoon season and its possible consequences on agricultural production. He discussed various climate-resilient strategies for successful crop cultivation under uncertain rainfall conditions, including direct-seeded rice (DSR), in-situ moisture conservation practices, balanced use of fertilizers, particularly urea and DAP, and supplemental irrigation through sprinklers during prolonged dry spells. Special emphasis was given to the importance of balanced nutrient management for improving fertilizer-use efficiency, maintaining soil health, and enhancing crop productivity.
Dr. Mukherjee also delivered a detailed lecture on hybrid maize cultivation practices, covering improved crop establishment, nutrient management, and weed control measures. As part of the programme, hybrid maize seed (Variety: DKC 9126) and herbicides Atrazine and Topramezone were distributed to the participating farmers as critical inputs. The technical aspects of herbicide application, including the recommended dose, timing, method of application, and safety precautions, were thoroughly explained to ensure effective and safe weed management. The farmers actively participated in the discussions, shared their field experiences, and expressed their interest in adopting the recommended climate-smart and scientific crop management practices. The programme concluded with an interactive session and a vote of thanks.
