Workshop organized to create awareness on threat of Parthenium   (20 August, 2016)


Directorate of weed Research organized a workshop to create awareness amongst voluntary organizations, students and residents of the city in view of threat of spread of weeds. Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Dr. Swati Godbole, Mayor of Jabalpur called upon residents to destroy Parthenium weed by roots. She said that Directorate of Weed Science and Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) will make the city a Smart City by eradicating weed with the help of public participation. Garbage collected in this way will be exploited in generation electricity at Kathaunda.

Special guest Sardar Harnek Singh said that public participation can only be a means of destroying Parthenium. He also shared his experiences during the workshop and apprised about public participation which helped to develop Mansuran village as first Parthenium free village of Punjab. Mr. Singh also called upon Mayor Swati Godbole to make efforts in this regard. Directorate weed Science felicitated Dr. Singh by presenting a shawl, Shripal and a felicitation letter. Dr. Ajit Ram Sharma promised the Mayor that institute will provide all technical information in the context to Municipal Corporation. Dr. Ajit Ram Sharma, Director, Directorate of Weed research also provided information about works done on Parthenium in the Directorate. He also informed the efforts made by the Directorate in Conservation Agriculture.

Dr. Sushil Kumar, Programme coordinator, provided detailed information to the gathering about the ill effects of Parthenium and measures to control it. Information about the insect which eats Parthenium as biological control of weed was given. It was disturbed free of cost to farmers at this occasion. Dr.Yogita Gharde conducted the programme and Dr. P.K. Singh gave the vote of thanks
